When I was 19, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps and learned from an early age the importance of defending our great nation abroad. As an FBI agent, I learned to defend it at home. New York City remains the #1 terrorist target in the nation, which is why I will not cave when it comes to supporting a strong national defense policy.
Supporting our Troops
When we send our country’s most valuable assets – our sons and daughters serving in uniform – into harm’s way we take on a sacred obligation to ensure they have the tools they need to accomplish the mission. I pledge to them that I will always work tirelessly to ensure that they have the best equipment and full support of our nation, for both them and their families.
Standing up for Law Enforcement and First Responders
I have fought relentlessly against cuts to law enforcement resources – successfully passing an amendment through Congress to prevent a cut to the COPS hiring program and another to preserve funding for regional information sharing activities that help law enforcement coordinate efforts. I also took a stand for our first responders, successfully blocking cuts to the FIRE/SAFER grants that provide jobs, training, and equipment for our local fire departments. Our NYPD and FDNY are the best in the nation, and I have given them my full support in Congress and will continue to do so throughout my time in office.
Securing our Border
Here at home, we face a threat along our southern borders. The onslaught of violence in Mexico is of grave concern, as is the security of our border as drugs and illegal immigrants cross daily into the United States. I believe that we must take greater strides to strengthen and secure our borders if we are to put an end to the trafficking and increase security within the United States.
In Brooklyn, we are fortunate to have Fort Hamilton as a cornerstone of our community and home to Brooklyn’s 24th National Guard Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team (WMD-CST). When the WMD-CST was threatened by proposed cuts, I worked to secure both authorization and funding to keep it open and operational. Located at Fort Hamilton, this team is highly-trained to respond to high-risk situations and assist the NYPD and FDNY in response efforts, proving their worth during the recent terrorist attack on the Boston Marathon where they were on the ground from the moment the bombs detonated. Keeping this team in Brooklyn is crucial to our safety and security.
