Rep. Michael G. Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) joined an overwhelming number of his House colleagues on both sides of the political divide in voting for a package of bills that makes it easier for small businesses and start-ups to raise capital they need to grow.
Republicans call it the JOBS Act -- which stands for Jumpstart our Business Startups. Democrats called it a modest effort by the GOP to show they can accomplish something in an otherwise do-nothing Congress.
The measure passed the House 390-23.
"With recent toll hikes and rising gas prices, Staten Islanders are badly in need of new economic opportunities," said Grimm in a prepared statement. "The JOBS Act cuts the red tape and over-regulation, creating a more viable environment for our entrepreneurs and small businesses to grow and create jobs. By getting big government out of the way, this bill will increase access to capital and reduce the uncertainty from Washington that has been stifling economic growth."
