And still, there were 180 niggling holdouts who begrudged overdue aid to suffering victims of this catastrophic storm.

Finally, on Tuesday, as we approached 12 weeks after the monster storm slammed in to the Northeast coastline, the House of Representatives decided to do right by the victims in an alarmingly narrow vote of 241-180. (By contrast, the vote in favor of providing aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina came just 10 days after the storm struck and was overwhelming.)

The vote will come 78 days after Hurricane Sandy devastated the Island and other parts of the Northeast, and as the city is demolishing homes damaged beyond repair by Sandy.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The House Friday passed an initial $9.7 billion in Hurricane Sandy aid after days of internal GOP back-biting had threatened to further delay financial help to hard-hit victims of the killer October storm on Staten Island, elsewhere in New York and New Jersey.

The 354-67 vote in favor replenishes the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which had reached its borrowing cap of $21 billion.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Rep. Michael Grimm said he would "look at" any legislation offered to renew a federal ban on assault weapons in the wake of last week's deadly Connecticut school shooting.

But Grimm suggested it was too early for him to comment on a possible ban on the kind of weaponry used in the horrific mass slaying, even as a nationwide debate ensues and several conservative-leaning Republicans here said they support such a ban.

Grimm also said there should be a tandem focus on the "rise in violence in young people."

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- It's only a few blocks, but to a disabled veteran who relies on public transportation, the walk from to the Brooklyn Veterans Affairs  Hospital from the last stop on the S53  -- or the wait for a transfer to the B70 -- represents a painful failure of city planning.
